Illinois quick hits: Two killed in construction accident; 5th town joins Bears relocation battle

Two killed in construction accident

Two people were killed and two others were injured after an incident at a construction site of a pipeline in southern Illinois.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reports it received a 911 call about an industrial accident near Grand Tower. When authorities arrived at the scene of the Kinder Morgan Natural Gas Pipeline project, two people were dead and two others were transported to the hospital.

The details of the incident were still unclear late Tuesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that the state of Illinois has awarded $9.5 million in funding to 40 different applicants across the state to support post-pandemic child and adolescent health.

The funding is primarily from the CDC’s COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Supplemental Funding program authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act plus $500,000 in state dollars. Sixty percent of the grants are going to schools, 20% to hospital or clinic-based programs, and the rest to local health departments and colleges.

5th town joins Bears relocation battle

Another Illinois community is making a pitch to be the home of a potential Chicago Bears stadium.

A Cook County commissioner is asking the team to consider Country Club Hills as a place to build a stadium complex. This comes after the Bears said in June that Arlington Park, which they purchased in February, was no longer the only focus of a new stadium.

Country Club Hills becomes the fifth community to make contact with the team.
