Illinois quick hits: UAW strike hits home; race riot monument; arts grant opens

UAW strike will hit Illinois pocketbook

Near-term impacts to the credit of various U.S. states including Illinois aren’t expected by the United Auto Workers’ strike, but Fitch Ratings says a protracted work stoppage could erode consumer activity and state and local revenues. A report released Thursday says the limited number of striking workers will limit the short-term economic and fiscal effects in Missouri, Ohio and Michigan, but Illinois facilities could be impacted if the strike is expanded and extended.

Race riot of 1908 could get national monument status

The U.S. Senate could soon take up a measure to approve the Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument Act. U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth announced the measure passed committee. The violence more than a century ago stemming from a mob of white Springfield residents led to the murder of at least six Black Americans and scores of homes and businesses burned. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was formed in the aftermath.
