USPS pauses consolidations

The U.S. Postal Service is pausing the consolidation of mail processing facilities around Illinois until at least next year.

Officials previously announced that the Processing and Distribution Centers in Champaign, Peoria and Springfield would be modernized in a cost cutting move. Outgoing mail would be processed in St. Louis and Chicago.

Lawmakers and postal workers expressed concerns about delays caused by shipping mail out of state and the likelihood of the loss of jobs.

Man pleads guilty to Masters theft

A former employee of the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia has admitted in federal court in Chicago that he stole millions of dollars worth of Masters golf tournament merchandise and sold it to online brokers.

Richard Globensky pleaded guilty to a charge of transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce. The conviction is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The merchandise included Masters shirts, hats and the Green Jackets won by Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan.

Cicadas are here

They’re here. Cicada sightings have been reported in parts of Illinois. Soon, millions will emerge from the ground.

In Illinois, two broods of periodical cicadas will come out. In central and southern Illinois, it’s the 13-year cicadas. In central and northern Illinois, it’s the 17-year cicadas.
