Illinois quick hits: Vault thief sentenced; freezing temps coming

Vault thief sentenced

An Indiana woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing over a half million dollars from the vault of the Illinois credit union where she worked.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office reported that Laurie Allen, 55, must also pay $510,000 in restitution. According to prosecutors, between January 2014 and December 2020, Allen stole cash from the vault of Vibrant Credit Union in Danville, where she was employed as a branch manager.

Among the highest student loan payments

Illinois is home to some of the highest student loan payments in the country.

The personal finance website WalletHub analyzed the latest consumer data and compared the median student loan payment amounts across 50 states. Illinois ranked 10th in the country with a median monthly student loan payment of $207.

Maryland topped the list with an average student loan payment of $232, while West Virginia ranked 50th with a median payment of $139.

Freezing temps coming

The above normal temperatures Illinoisans have been enjoying of late will be coming to an end soon. Many will see temperatures in the 70s on Friday, but a dome of cold air will sweep in over the weekend.

The National Weather Service predicts for the high temperatures to be closer to 40 around the state for the following several days with lows at night dipping into the 20s. Another warmup is expected at the end of next week.
