(The Center Square) – Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker says he’s disappointed in Tuesday’s election outcome with Donald Trump retaking the White House, but he is prepared for what may come.
While Illinois went to Vice President Kamala Harris 53% to 45%, Trump did win most of the state’s counties. Regardless, Trump swept swing states and captured the necessary Electoral College votes and the popular vote. Republicans also captured the U.S. Senate and are predicted to hold onto the House, with several dozen races still to be decided nationwide.
“Donald Trump will be our next president. He won the election and we must all be willing to work together for the common good,” Pritzker said Thursday.
Pritzker said he’s been through part of a Trump administration before as a governor.
“Chaos, retribution and disarray radiated from the White House the last time Donald Trump occupied it. Perhaps this time may be different,” Pritzker said. “But if it isn’t, Illinois will remain a place of stability and competent governance.”
Trump is expected to be sworn into office Jan. 20.
Illinois Republican Party chair Kathy Salvi praised the incoming administration, saying Trump’s previous administration from 2017 to 2021 was positive for the country.
“President Trump’s administration brought us prosperity four years ago and will do so again by securing our border, bringing down the cost of living for families, and protecting our individual liberties,” Salvi said.
Pritzker dodged a question about what’s next for his political career. A third term? A run for president? The governor laughed when he was asked those questions.
“As you know, the work that I do now as governor is work that I love doing,” Pritzker said.
His first two years in office, Trump was president and Pritzker expects to continue working to counter what he characterized were bad policies from the Republican. But, Pritzker didn’t want to make any political announcements at this time.
“You’ll be among the first to know if I have something to announce in running for reelection and I have no plans for anything else,” Pritzker said.
The next gubernatorial election for Illinois is in two years.
Illinois Republicans released a statement after Pritzker’s news conference.
“JB Pritzker might as well have announced his 2028 campaign for the Presidency in his deceptive media availability this morning,” the party said. “Republicans have established the party of hard working Americans, while Democrats have become the party of wealthy elites. It’s only fitting that they turn to another wealthy elite in 2028. Governor Pritzker should do us all a favor and start his campaign now. We’ll be just fine without him.”
