Several new laws for animals went into effect in 2024

(The Center Square) – Illinois is set to have several new laws on the books starting in 2024, some will affect animals and pets.

One of the measures taking effect in 2024 is Senate Bill 1883, which makes it illegal in Illinois for one to come into direct contact with a bear or nonhuman primate.

Marc Ayers of the Humane Society explained what others are on the books for 2024.

“We also passed a huge groundbreaking measure which was Senate Bill 1882, which prohibits the use of dogs and cats and unnecessary toxicity testing trials,” Ayers said.

Ayers told The Center Square that 2023 was a good year for animal legislation.

“2022 was a banner year, we passed numerous laws then and we thought there is no way we can replicate that but we proved ourselves wrong,” Ayers said. “We passed not one, but three into law in 2023.”

Another new law in House Bill 3226 states that one should not assist a person or make loans to assist a person buying a dog or cat.

Penalties for these new laws include fines and jail time if broken and found guilty.
