(The Center Square) – In a U.S. Senate hearing, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) called on major technology companies to take responsibility for preventing drug dealers from exploiting their platforms. He made reference to the recent tragic case of the 16-year-old Cooper Davis, who died after purchasing a fentanyl-laced pill from a dealer on Snapchat. Durbin emphasized the immediate need for more safeguards.
During this hearing, Durbin brought up the bipartisan efforts to pass the Cooper Davis Act, a bill that would require tech companies to take a proactive stance against illicit drug sales. “Last Congress, the Judiciary Committee advanced several bipartisan bills to hold these companies accountable,” he said.
“Sadly, Cooper is not the only teen who has lost his life to drugs peddled on social media,” Durbin stated, bringing to light the dangers of online drug transactions.
