Harris VP pick may join rally with Detroit United Auto Workers on Wednesday

(The Center Square) – Kamala Harris’ vice presidential nominee is expected to appear Wednesday in Detroit.

Several news outlets are saying Harris’ pick for a running mate is expected to come on or before Tuesday, when a tour of key battleground states begins in Pennsylvania.

Both Harris, who recently received the endorsement of the United Auto Workers, and potentially her VP pick plan a rally in the Motor City to follow up the Pennsylvania stop. UAW expressed its support for Harris on July 31 in a statement made by its International Executive Board.

“Our job in this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her proven track record of delivering for the working class,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in a news release. “We stand at a crossroads in this country. We can put a billionaire back in office who stands against everything our union stands for, or we can elect Kamala Harris who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us in our war on corporate greed.”

The board says it picked Harris for voting against trade deals like NAFTA, NAFTA 2.0, and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. They say she also picketed alongside autoworkers during a 2019 strike.

Fain has said that while the union supports Harris, it would not endorse Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro or Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. In the past, Shapiro supported school-choice vouchers, while detractors argue Kelly opposed a labor organizing bill.

While Shapiro and Kelly are mentioned to be among the finalists, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz remains a blue collar favorite. The North Star State politician has been endorsed by more than 25 Minnesota labor unions, including AFL-CIO, MN Teamsters, AFSCME, Education Minnesota and United Food and Commercial Workers.
