U.S. Supreme Court to hear Line 5 Michigan lawsuit

(The Center Square) – The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case on Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 brought in 2019 by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Enbridge had previously been denied moving the case to federal court. The U.S. Supreme Court listed the case on an order list but did not explain the decision.

Nessel originally filed the lawsuit attempting to shut down Line 5 operations near the Straits of Mackinac. Line 5 has proposed boring a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac to house the pipeline and the permitting for that project has been expedited through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The transmission line owned by Enbridge goes 645 miles from Superior, Wis., through the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan to Sarnia, Ontario.

It moves more than 500,000 barrels of oil and natural gas liquids daily.

The pipeline currently lies on the bottom of the Straits, which is a

4-mile wide waterway connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, dividing Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

The $500 million project for 3.6 miles of pipeline tunneled under the straits between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.
