Missouri governor issues executive order to prepare for bitter cold, snow

(The Center Square) – Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Parson issued an executive order to prepare for severe winter weather this weekend throughout the state

The National Weather Service’s forecast predicted bitter cold temperatures and an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow in northern Missouri.

The declared state of emergency waives some restrictions on the transportation of residential heating fuels, such as propane, natural gas and heating oil. The order suspends the hours when the fueling service can be provided, found in the Code of Federal Regulations and incorporated into state law.

The order also activates the Missouri National Guard. If needed, the National Guard would assist state and local responses to the severe weather.

“With extreme cold forecasted for this weekend, we want to be prepared to respond however may be needed,” Parson said in a statement. “Missourians should be proactive in their preparations and so too should state government. This Order helps ensure Missourians’ homes stay heated and that state government and our National Guard members stand ready to assist.”

The NWS predicted an artic air blast will enter the region today, bringing temperatures into the teens or single digits and wind chills below zero through next week. Wind chills below -25 and -40 are expected between Saturday night and Monday Night. Winds will range from 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts ranging from 40 to 50 miles per hours.

“This will result in difficult driving conditions, especially on north-south roads, for high profile vehicles, and where freshly fallen snow can blow to reduce visibility,” the NWS stated.

The snow in northern Missouri is expected to arrive Friday afternoon along with a 20% to 30% chance of a glaze of ice across the state.

The biggest outdoor event in the state will be Saturday night’s National Football League playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The NWS is forecasting the temperature will be below zero and wind chills could the temperature feel like -21.

The Chiefs also altered some security measures as guests can carry in blankets draped over their shoulder during the screening process and communicated heating stations throughout the stadium.
