Election legislation roundup: Wisconsin State Senate

As of Sept. 3, Ballotpedia has tracked 11 election-related bills in the Wisconsin State Senate since the beginning of the year. Of the 11, Ballotpedia tracked one from Aug. 28-Sept. 3. Republicans sponsored the bill. The bill is below:

WI SB39: Fees for obtaining the official voter registration list (FE), Reps. David Armstrong (R), Amy Binsfeld (R), Ty Bodden (R), Janel Brandtjen (R), Robert Donovan (R), Nate Gustafson (R), Gae Magnafici (R), Dave Maxey (R), David Murphy (R), Peter Schmidt (R), David Steffen (R), Paul Tittl (R), and Chuck Wichgers (R), and Sens. Andre Jacque (R), Dan Knodl (R), Stephen Nass (R), Duey Stroebel (R), and Cory Tomczyk (R). As introduced, this bill, establishes a fee of up to $250.00 for an electronic copy of the official voter registration list. If a physical copy is requested additional fees may be charged.

During the week of Aug. 28-Sept. 3, Ballotpedia tracked one Senate election-related bill nationally. As of Sept. 3, Ballotpedia has tracked 1,097 Senate bills nationally. Ballotpedia tracked the most Senate bills this year in the New York State Senate with 160, while Ballotpedia tracked the fewest Senate bills in the Vermont State Senate with two.

As of Sept. 3, Ballotpedia has tracked 518 Senate bills in Democratic trifectas and 434 Senate bills in Republican trifectas. A trifecta is when one political party holds the governorship and majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. Ballotpedia has tracked 145 Senate bills in states where neither party holds trifecta control.

The Wisconsin Senate is scheduled to be in session from Jan. 3 to Dec. 31 this year. In 2022, Ballotpedia tracked 36 Senate bills related to election administration. One of these bills passed both chambers and was enacted into law. Wisconsin is a divided government, meaning neither party holds trifecta control.
