(The Center Square) – The group that wants to recall Wisconsin’s assembly speaker says it is “on track” to get enough signatures this time.
Racine Recall organizers gave an update on their second effort to oust Speaker Robin Vos.
“When Racine Recall turns in the required number of valid signatures calling for Robin’s recall, we will mark the transfer of power from the closed fist of Robin Vos to the people of Wisconsin,” Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman told a crowd of supporters.
Gableman has a checkered personal past with Vos.
He was tapped to lead an investigation into Wisconsin’s 2020 election, but Vos later fired him after that investigation failed.
State Rep. Janelle Brandtjen, R-Menomonee Falls, also has a checkered past with Vos.
She too led an investigation into the 2020 election through her Assembly committee. That investigation also floundered when local election officials sued and refused to cooperate. But Brandtjen was also uninvited from the Republican Caucus in the Assembly over the near-constant criticism of Vos that followed the end of her investigation.
“I’ve been removed not only from the committee, and removed from the Assembly, but I’m under an ethics investigation,” she said. “There’s a penalty for standing up.”
Vos has criticized the recall effort as being driven by personal vendettas. He also called the recall organizers “whack jobs” and “morons.”
The first attempt to recall Vos failed because organizers failed to get enough valid signatures from either Vos’ old Assembly district or his new district.
In order for this recall to be successful, the new organizers will need to get 6,850 valid signatures.
Neither Gableman nor Brandtjen said how many signatures the Racine Recall effort has. Those signatures are due to the Wisconsin Elections next week.
