(The Center Square) – Wisconsin Democrats and elected leaders are remembering former President Jimmy Carter.
Gov. Tony Evers on Sunday reacted to Carter’s death at age 100.
“Former President Carter was a committed and dedicated advocate for peace, human rights, and treating others with dignity, decency, and respect—qualities that earned him respect and admiration from many across our country and around the world. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of humanitarian and public health achievements not only during and throughout his presidency but beyond it, as well,” Evers said in a statement.
Evers also promised to order flags across Wisconsin be lowered in honor of Carter.
Wisconsin’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin also had kind words for the former president.
“President Carter was a leader who dedicated his life to fighting for others. While he will be sorely missed, his legacy of compassion, humility, and service will long be remembered and honored. My heart is with the Carter family and American people mourning this loss,” Baldwin said.
Madison’s Democratic Congressman Mark Pocan also weighed in.
“President Jimmy Carter was a great American. From his groundbreaking work for peace in the Middle East to his decades of work with Habitat for Humanity, he was a beacon of service. A champion for human rights, including LGBTQI+, he was a role model for many. He will be missed,” Pocan wrote on social media.
Western Wisconsin’s Republican Congressman Derrick Van Orden offered some kind thoughts about Carter.
“My Ma was raised in Minnesota and loved Jimmy Carter and obviously Hubert Humphrey. She would have been very sad to hear of his passing,” Van Orden said on social media. “He served our nation as a Navy Man, President, and Humanitarian. May God grant him gentle repose and his family, Peace.”
Carter’s family says he died on Sunday after a long stay in hospice.
Carter will have a state funeral that will begin in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. He will then be brought to Washington to lie in state. After that, he will be taken back to Plains to be buried next to his late wife Rosalynn.
