(The Center Square) – One of Wisconsin’s Democratic members of Congress thinks President Donald Trump will actually deliver on more promises this time around.
Madison Democrat Mark Pocan told reporters he thinks the new president will actually be able to accomplish more in his second term than his first time around.
“We’re fearful,” Pocan said. “He’s more organized, and he’s done this before. And I think you’ll see a higher level of the things that he puts out there become reality. Although I’m not sure that Canada is going to be our 51st state.”
Pocan said during the first Trump Administration, the president only delivered on about 10% of his promises. He expects the new president to deliver on “more like 20% this time.”
“Is he going to, in an improper way, go after some of the people who are here, Including [legal immigrants] according to some of the bills we had before us, I think he will,”Pocan added. “Because I think it’s more about the rhetoric than the actual practice.”
Pocan spent his day Monday in Madison, working with immigrant groups rather than in Washington, D.C. for the inauguration.
Pocan said his focus for these first days of the new Trump Administration is on immigrants in Wisconsin.
“We are going to fight back at every level, and we’re going to make sure the state of Wisconsin is doing what they can. Fortunately, we have a governor who I have faith in,” Pocan added. “I think our local communities, the city of Madison and Dane County, need to step up and do a lot more because the federal government is not going to be there to do the right thing.”
Trump has repeatedly said he will focus deportation orders on illegal immigrants who he says pose a threat to American cities.
Both the city of Madison and Dane County have said they will continue to offer services to the area’s illegal community, though local leaders have said they’re not sure what is coming from the new president’s administration.
A number of local police departments have already said they will not ask people about their immigration status but will deport anyone who is in this country illegally who then commits a serious crime or is a suspected gang member or terrorist.
