Airport Lines Grow as Government Shutdown Hits TSA Staffing

(AURN News) — Chaos continues at airports across the country as the government shutdown makes flying even more stressful.

With the partial government shutdown in effect, many airports are seeing long delays as a result of TSA agents not receiving pay, with many calling out of work.

On Facebook, Houston Hobby Airport, which has seen major delays, posted a message asking travelers to arrive early.

“Due to the partial federal government shutdown affecting TSA staffing, passengers should arrive 3–4 hours before their flight to allow time to check bags and get through security,” the airport said.

“Spring break travel is still underway, so expect a busy airport. TSA opens as early as 3 a.m.”

The shutdown stems from an impasse between Republicans and Democrats in Congress over immigration policy.

Democrats are working to stop Republican-led efforts to expand immigration detention, increase deportation authorities and restrict asylum access. They say those policy changes should not be attached to a must-pass government funding bill.
