Another Republican Calling It Quits as Party Divides Deepen

Another centrist Republican is calling it quits. Congressman Don Bacon says he will not seek reelection next year, citing deepening political dysfunction and a GOP he says is becoming unrecognizable.

Bacon’s district, Nebraska’s 2nd, isn’t your typical red zone. It has gone blue in the last three presidential , voting for Obama, Biden and, most recently, Kamala Harris.

It is one of just two districts in the country that split their Electoral College vote, and swing voters are king.

Bacon, an Air Force veteran and self-described centrist, says he’s tired of taking hits from the right for trying to work across the aisle.

Bacon survived multiple election cycles by staying moderate, even backing Biden’s bill, but lately his own party has turned on him. In 2024, the Nebraska GOP backed a Trump-endorsed primary challenger.

Now, he says it’s time to let someone else put in 12- to 14-hour days and try to hold this purple seat.
