Automatic Draft Registration to Begin in December

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — A major change is coming to the Selective Service System, with automatic registration set to begin later this year.

According to the agency, it will modernize its systems to prepare for a potential national emergency.

“The Agency will modernize legacy conscription applications to ensure secure, reliable systems are ready in the event of a national emergency,” the Selective Service System said on its website.

Under the change, draft-age men will be automatically registered starting in December 2026. The update follows President Donald Trump’s signing of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act.

The policy applies to men between the ages of 18 and 25.

The development comes as the Army has also expanded its enlistment eligibility. Non-prior service applicants can now enlist from age 17 up to and including age 42.

The United States has operated under an all-volunteer military since 1973, when the last draft took place.
