Biden Convenes AI Experts Amid Emerging Concerns and Promises

In a significant move, President Joe Biden is convening a high-profile meeting with artificial intelligence specialists in San Francisco on Tuesday. The gathering is seen as a key component of his administration’s ongoing initiative to navigate the complex terrain of risks and rewards associated with AI.

Participants include Jim Steyer of Common Sense Media, Sal Khan of Khan Academy, and Tristan Harris from the Center for Humane Technology. They all share common concerns for the safe construction of AI while recognizing its vast potential.

Last year, the administration unveiled a strategic framework to counter the threats posed by AI following an executive order in February. The directive mandated federal agencies to identify and combat bias, fostering equity in the design of emerging technologies, including AI.

Vice President Harris took a significant step back in May when she invited AI innovators, including giants Google and Microsoft, to the White House. The move coincided with the announcement of a $140 million investment in seven new AI research hubs.
