Bipartisan Push Aims to Boost HBCU Research Funding

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Sens. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., and Katie Britt, R-Ala., recently introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at streamlining federal funding opportunities for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The HBCU Research Capacity Act would create a federally coordinated website with information about HBCU-eligible STEM research and development funding opportunities.

The senators announced the bill during a roundtable with more than 30 HBCU presidents.

“Despite not always having every tool at their disposal, they continue to make massive contributions to the research and development community,” said Sen. Raphael Warnock.

“One of my biggest takeaways from the roundtable was our shared passion for ensuring all HBCUs have the resources available to provide their students with the highest level of opportunity — which I’m committed to continue fighting for,” Sen. Katie Britt said.

The bill amends Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965, directing the secretary of education to coordinate with federal agencies to create a centralized website listing grant opportunities for HBCUs.
