Black Historic Sites Receive $3 Million in Preservation Grants

(AURN News) — According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund has awarded $3 million to preserve 27 Black sites and organizations.

The funding includes $2.26 million for 22 projects through the National Grant Program and $750,000 for five projects through the Conserving Black Modernism initiative.

Grant recipients include the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, the Eliza Freeman House in Connecticut, the home of pioneering educator Dr. Jane Ellen McAllister in Mississippi and Hotel Thelma in West Virginia, a Green Book site visited by music legends including Etta James and Sam Cooke.

Other grants will protect buildings designed by Black Modernist architects at Fisk University, Texas Southern University and Northeastern University.
