Black Republican Surges in Texas Senate Race

(AURN News) — Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, who has received less media attention than his opponents — incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — is now running second in recent polling in the Texas U.S. Senate race.

A new survey by J.L. Partners found Paxton leading with 27% support among likely voters, followed by Hunt with 25.7% and Cornyn with 25.5%. The poll surveyed a statewide sample of 600 likely voters. J.L. Partners noted that Paxton’s support is down two points from December, with the Republican primary scheduled for March.

Among MAGA Republicans, Hunt leads Cornyn despite being the only Black candidate in the race. Paxton receives 33% support among that group, followed by Hunt with 29% and Cornyn with 14%.

“With lots of different polls flying around from different sides, this poll provides one of the few unbiased takes out there,” said James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners. “It shows Ken Paxton is beatable, with his lead narrowing to one point, but a three-way tie could yet gift him in the primary,” he added.

“Though both John Cornyn and Wesley Hunt see improvements, it is Wesley Hunt who seems to have the most momentum.”

The poll also examined hypothetical scenarios in which one candidate exits the race. If Cornyn were to drop out, Hunt would lead Paxton by 10 points. If Paxton were to drop out, Hunt would lead Cornyn by 11 points, according to the poll.
