Blanche’s Attorney General Nomination Stalls in Senate Committee

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Todd Blanche’s nomination to become attorney general has stalled after the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed a vote on advancing his confirmation.

The vote was called off Wednesday night after two Republicans on the panel declined to say whether they would support him.

At issue are the concerns of Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. Both want the Justice Department to put its assurances in writing before they will move forward.

Their concerns center on a legal settlement the department reached in President Donald Trump’s case against the IRS. Critics say the agreement could shield Trump from future tax audits tied to returns filed before the deal.

Tillis has also raised concerns, pressing for guarantees that the controversial Anti-Weaponization Fund — which critics say could funnel money to Trump’s allies — is shut down.

Blanche continues to lead the Justice Department as acting attorney general, but his nomination remains before the committee, which has not said when — or if — the vote will be rescheduled.
