(AURN News) – South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace is pushing a bill that would remove the name Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House and rename it Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.
The bill covers two blocks of 16th Street in downtown D.C., steps from the White House, and would change how the area is labeled on federal maps, signs and government records.Mace timed the bill to the three-month anniversary of Kirk’s assassination, calling him a champion of free speech and a voice for young Americans. The area was first renamed Black Lives Matter Plaza in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd, when D.C. officials painted the street in large yellow letters.
Mace says George Floyd’s murder caused unrest and destruction, while Kirk’s death brought peaceful prayers and gatherings. But federal agents documented a spike in online threats and conspiracy theories, and the nation was neither calm nor unified.
