‘Cancel the Burial’: Alabama Voting Rights Fight Heads Back to Court

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — Civil rights groups are heading back to federal court in Alabama as a major fight over Black voting rights intensifies following the Supreme Court’s recent Louisiana v. Callais decision.

“Since Callais, pundits and politicians have been quick to declare Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act dead, but our filing with the court has a clear response: cancel the burial.”

That was the warning from the National Redistricting Foundation as a major voting rights battle still unfolds in Alabama.

Civil rights groups are asking a federal court to stop Alabama from reviving a congressional map previously ruled discriminatory against Black voters.

The fight comes after the Supreme Court’s recent Louisiana v. Callais decision weakened key parts of the Voting Rights Act. But advocates say Alabama is going even further by trying to cancel parts of an election already in progress to restore a map federal judges have already blocked.

According to the plaintiffs, military and overseas ballots were already mailed weeks ago, and voters have already started casting ballots under the current court-approved map.
