CBC Members Push for Federal Holiday Honoring Rosa Parks

Representative Terri Sewell of Alabama, joined by Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairman Steve Horsford and other CBC members, is urging the passage of the Rosa Parks Day Act to make December 1 a federal holiday commemorating the arrest of Parks.

On December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott and galvanizing the civil rights movement.

Here’s Rep. Sewell on the potential new holiday:

“By commemorating the arrest of Rosa Parks with a new federal holiday, we will help ensure that her brave sacrifice is never forgotten. Each year, Rosa Parks Day will serve as a reminder of the power of ordinary Americans to achieve extraordinary social change. It will become the first federal holiday in our nation’s history to honor a woman and to honor a Black woman.”
