(AURN News) — A new estimate from the Congressional Budget Office suggests that more than 10 million Americans could lose their health coverage over the next decade if Republican-backed healthcare cuts become law.
According to a letter released this week, the CBO projects the number of uninsured people in the U.S. will rise sharply due to two major policy changes: the scheduled expiration of expanded premium tax credits at the end of 2025 and reforms proposed in President Donald Trump’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
That bill, which passed the House in late May with only Republican support, would slash subsidies and limit Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. The CBO’s analysis found the combined effect of these changes would significantly roll back insurance coverage gains made over the past decade.
Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey and Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts — all Democratic committee leaders — requested the analysis.
The CBO also warned that the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits alone, originally expanded under the American Rescue Plan and later extended, could start reversing coverage gains as early as 2026. Combined with the GOP-backed provisions, the number of uninsured Americans could swell to more than 38 million by 2034.
