Do ‘Good Christians’ Have to Back Trump? Most Say No

(AURN News) — A new survey from the Pew Research Center offers a window into how Christians see faith and politics after the 2024 presidential election.

Most Americans said they do not believe God plays a role in U.S. elections. Of those polled, 4% said God chose President Donald Trump because of his policies. Another 32% said Trump’s election was part of God’s plan but not necessarily an endorsement of his policies. Nearly half — 49% — said God does not get involved in presidential elections, while 14% said they do not believe in God.

The 2020 results were similar. Only 2% said God chose President Joe Biden because of his policies, while 34% said his election was part of God’s plan without implying approval. Again, 49% said God does not get involved, and 14% said they do not believe in God.

Christians were also asked whether supporting Trump was essential to being a “good Christian.” Eighty percent said good Christians can disagree with Trump, while 7% said supporting him is essential.

The survey also found that 56% of Americans said religion shapes how they vote very little or not at all. Looking ahead to 2024, 42% of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters said God does not get involved in presidential elections.
