“The law enforcement response at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022 — and in the hours and days after — was a failure that should not have happened.”

That was U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland at a press conference discussing a newly released Department of Justice report blasting Uvalde police for their response to the mass shooting.

“A series of major failures – failures in leadership, in tactics, in communication, and in training and preparedness — were made by law enforcement leaders and others. As a result, 33 students and three of their teachers — many of whom had been shot — were trapped in a room with an active shooter for over an hour as law enforcement officials remained outside.”

The report, consisting of nearly 500 pages, provides a detailed analysis of the events and recommendations to guide communities facing similar tragedies.

While the report offers some closure to the grieving community, questions about lax gun regulations and accountability for the officers involved remain unanswered.
