In a historic milestone, Dr. Steven Williams, a distinguished Black plastic surgeon, has been appointed as the President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This announcement marks a significant moment in the organization’s 92-year history, as Dr. Williams becomes the first Black doctor to assume the prestigious role.

ASPS, recognized as the largest plastic surgery organization in the United States, has long been a leading authority in the field of plastic surgery.

Dr. Williams, who hails from the San Francisco, California area, is the founder of Tri Valley Plastic Surgery. As a board-certified surgeon, he has established himself as an expert in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, demonstrating his dedication to advancing the field.

“For me personally, it’s an achievement to be the first African American person to be president at ASPS. It’s an incredible sense of honor, duty, and pride. I’m really standing on the shoulders of people who came before me,” he said in a statement.

One of Williams’ notable contributions is his advocacy for African American patients. He has consistently worked to provide a voice for the Black community in the realm of plastic surgery, aiming to ensure unique needs and concerns are heard and addressed.

Dr. Williams has a distinguished educational background, having graduated from Yale University. In addition to his surgical expertise, he has also made a mark on the political stage by lobbying on Capitol Hill. His efforts have focused on advocating for insurance rights for breast cancer survivors.
