Fire at Will: Supreme Court Signals Trump Could Gain More Power

(AURN News) — Who really runs America’s independent agencies — Congress or the president? The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to let President Donald Trump remove Rebecca Slaughter, a Democratic commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission, while her case plays out.

The ruling signals the Court could soon overturn a 90-year-old decision that shielded regulators from political interference. In 1935, the justices unanimously held that presidents could remove commissioners only for misconduct or neglect of duty. That decision created the backbone of agencies Americans rely on today, from consumer protection to labor rights.

But the conservative majority is opening the door for Trump to remove board members at will. Critics warn it could replace experts with politics, even putting institutions like the Federal Reserve at risk.

The Court will hear arguments in December.
