Haitian Man Dies in Arizona ICE Detention After Untreated Tooth Infection

(AURN News) — A Haitian man died after months in U.S. immigration detention when a tooth infection reportedly went untreated, according to The Associated Press.

Emmanuel Damas, 56, was held at the Florence Correctional Center in Arizona and complained of a severe toothache in mid-February, according to his brother Presly Nelson.

Nelson said Damas was never sent to a dentist, despite the condition being treatable. Damas died Monday at a hospital.

His brother said such a death should not happen in a country with advanced health care.

Damas is among at least nine people who have died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody this year.

Officials have not yet responded publicly, and the medical examiner listed the cause of death as pending.

Earlier the same day, ICE also announced the death of another detainee who died after reporting chest pain.
