Harvard University was back in federal court Monday, this time battling President Donald Trump’s administration over a staggering $2.6 billion in slashed research funding. The Ivy League titan says the cuts are political retaliation.
The administration has criticized Harvard as fostering antisemitism and liberal elitism, but Harvard’s attorney pushed back, arguing this is about control, not compliance, and said the funding freeze could shut down labs, end careers and cripple innovation.
This isn’t just about the Ivy League fight. It’s a test of whether the federal government can wield dollars like a political weapon. The case is being heard by U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs, the same judge who once blocked Trump’s attempt to ban international students.
Higher education institutions across the country are watching closely because if Harvard falls, they fear they could be next.
