Job Growth Ticks Up as Black Unemployment Remains High

(AURN News) — The latest jobs report shows the U.S. economy added 178,000 jobs in March, with unemployment holding at 4.3% nationwide, a sign of modest growth.

But Black unemployment remains a serious concern. Even with the Black unemployment rate dropping to 7.1%, Black workers are still facing joblessness at nearly double the rate of white workers, whose unemployment rate stands at 3.6%.

In addition, long-term unemployment is rising, with 1.8 million Americans out of work for more than six months — up significantly over the past year and now making up more than a quarter of all unemployed workers.

Wage growth is also slowing, rising just 0.2% in March and 3.5% over the year — not a major boost for workers still dealing with high costs.

At the same time, federal jobs continue to decline, hitting sectors where many Black workers have long found stability. While the economy may be adding jobs, the gains are not being felt equally.
