John Ewing Jr. Elected Omaha’s First Black Mayor in Political Upset

According to The , Democrat John Ewing Jr. pulled off an upset in Omaha, defeating three-term Republican Mayor Jean Stothert to become the city’s first Black mayor.

Ewing’s victory is a major political shift in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, a key battleground where Trump’s agenda has grown increasingly unpopular.

Omaha — where Malcolm X was born — has long stood out as a Democratic stronghold in an otherwise red state.

Ewing, Douglas County treasurer and former deputy chief, focused on affordable and equitable development during his campaign.

His win is part of a broader national trend, as Democrats gain ground in contested areas ahead of the 2026 midterm .
