Former Vice President Kamala Harris made it official: She will not run for California governor, shutting down months of speculation with a statement saying she’s focused on the national stage, not Sacramento.
After her 2024 loss to Donald Trump, Harris returned home to California as the state grappled with wildfires, housing issues and Democratic infighting.
She seriously considered the governor’s race but ultimately decided her fight was bigger than one state. Harris is eyeing a national advocacy group, a potential book and a full rebranding in the 2026 midterms that could position her for a 2028 presidential run.
However, there is some friction. She is still facing criticism over claims of a Biden health coverup and her delayed responses to Trump’s power grabs. Even California allies have taken swipes at her. Still, her base remains strong, especially among Gen Z and small-dollar donors.
