Kohl’s to close 27 stores across U.S., including 10 in California

Kohl’s this weekend will close 27 stores across the U.S., with the largest number of closures, 10, in California.

“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the department store chain said in a news release.

Websites for the various stores show the final day of business is Saturday.

In addition to the brick-and-mortar stores, Kohl’s, which sells everything from clothes and shoes to jewelry and beauty products, plans to close another California facility, its San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center, by May. The retailer said it no longer needs the San Bernardino facility, which opened in 2010, because of the technology and efficiency at its newer fulfillment centers. The company has also expanded its ability to fulfill customer orders at the stores.

All employees at the closed locations were informed and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply for other jobs, Kohl’s said.

“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams,” CEO Tom Kingsbury said.

Nationally, Kohl’s, which will continue to operate more than 1,100 stores after the closures, reported $5.2 billion in its net sales during its fourth quarter, which ended Feb. 1. That’s a 9.4% decrease from the same period ending Feb. 1, 2024.
