Kwanza Jones Could Become MLB’s First Black Woman Majority Owner

(AURN News) — According to Essence, Kwanza Jones is poised to become Major League Baseball’s first Black woman majority owner through a reported $3.9 billion agreement to purchase the San Diego Padres.

The deal, led by Jones and her husband, José E. Feliciano, co-founder of Clearlake Capital, still needs approval from MLB owners.

If approved, Feliciano would become Major League Baseball’s second Latino majority owner and the league’s first majority owner of Puerto Rican descent.

Jones is a Princeton University graduate, entrepreneur, artist and philanthropist who has invested heavily in education and equity through the Jones Feliciano Initiative.

The sale would surpass the previous MLB record set when Steve Cohen bought the New York Mets for $2.4 billion in 2020.

The Padres, San Diego’s only major professional sports team, have seen record attendance in recent seasons as the ownership process moves forward this coming summer.
