Link Between Climate Change and Migration?

In addressing what they’re calling urgent challenges posed by climate change and its impact on migration and displacement, the State Department is now announcing a new approach when it comes to their policies.

In a press release, the U.S. Department of State said they believe that climate change is a driving force behind increased mobility and vulnerability, citing the 2021 White House Report on the Impact of Climate Change on Migration and highlighting the importance of migration as a response to climate-related threats.

Tens of millions of people are being uprooted by natural disasters due to the impact of climate change, though the world has yet to fully recognize climate migrants or come up with a formalized mechanism to assess their needs and help them. To address these issues, the Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) has outlined four key objectives. These include strengthening protections for affected populations, fostering partnerships with humanitarian organizations, engaging in multilateral diplomacy, and enhancing coordination between relevant agencies.
