Lost attorney general election, won a place in Trump administration

Losing the only election for a state office pitting two members of the U.S. House of Representatives has a nice consolation prize.

U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C., will leave Congress at the end of the month and prepare to work in the Trump administration as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. Bishop, winner of a special election in 2019 and reelected in 2020 and 2022, was defeated by U.S. Rep. Jeff Jackson in a duel for North Carolina attorney general.

“I am so honored to be nominated by President Trump to serve in the stellar OMB team led by Russ Vought,” Bishop said. “Much work to do to fight for and implement President Trump’s agenda. I’m ready to get down to it.”

In a statement, President-elect Donald Trump said, “Dan will implement my cost-cutting and deregulatory agenda across all agencies, and rout out the weaponized deep state.”

According to the White House website, the Office of Management and Budget has five functions across executive departments and agencies. These include but are not limited to oversight of agency performance; clearance of presidential executive orders; and development and execution of budgets.
