(AURN News) — A record 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day weekend, according to new projections from AAA. That’s the highest number ever recorded for the holiday.
Nearly 40 million people are expected to drive, even with gas prices sitting at their highest point since the summer of 2022. Another 3.6 million travelers are expected to fly, with airfare averaging around $800 round trip. That’s about 6% cheaper than last year for people who booked early.
The most popular domestic destinations include Orlando, Seattle, New York, Las Vegas and Miami, while international travelers are flocking to Rome, Paris and London.
Cruises are also surging this year, especially trips to Alaska.
Bottom line: Despite higher prices and economic uncertainty, Americans are making summer travel a priority.
