Millions of borrowers will now face uncertainty, as federal judges in Kansas and Missouri have blocked crucial parts of President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. The rulings prevent the Department of Education from easing repayment terms and accelerating debt cancellation for many.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed strong disagreement with the decision, affirming the Department of Justice will continue to vigorously defend the SAVE plan. The plan has benefited 8 million Americans with lower payments and faster debt relief. It was a cornerstone of the administration’s efforts to fix the broken student loan system.

President Joe Biden speaks about student loan debt at Madison College, April 8, 2024, in Madison, Wis. Relatively few Americans say they’re fans of Biden’s work on the issue of student loans, according to a new poll from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research conducted May 16-21. The survey found that three in 10 U.S. adults say they approve of how Biden has handled the issue of student loan debt, while 4 in 10 disapprove. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

Despite the legal hurdles, the administration is determined to enroll more borrowers and provide ongoing support. The court’s decision impacts efforts to lower payments for those with larger loans and shorten the required payment period from 25 to 20 years for forgiveness. The rulings follow earlier attempts to block Biden’s broader student loan relief initiatives, highlighting ongoing legal battles surrounding the issue.
