MLK Day: A Dream Under Pressure

(AURN News) – On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, civil rights leaders are drawing a line between Dr. King’s legacy and what they describe as present-day abuses of power, including aggressive Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions.

At the House of Justice in Harlem, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network are hosting a King Day public policy forum with more than a dozen elected officials as concerns grow over federal immigration raids, civil rights violations and the expansion of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in major cities.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are expected to address how local and state leaders plan to push back, particularly as Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics increasingly affect Black and immigrant communities.

Sharpton says efforts to expand federal enforcement while rolling back civil rights protections mirror the very injustices Dr. King fought against, warning that King’s legacy, and even the holiday itself, is being targeted.
