More Pain for American Flyers

(AURN News) — Get ready for more pain at the airport. The U.S. Department of Transportation says it will begin reducing capacity at 40 airports nationwide. The 10% reduction was announced earlier this week. The department called the move a “data-based” decision.

Air traffic controllers are working without pay as the government shutdown continues. The Trump administration blames Democrats, even though Republicans control the White House, Senate and House.

“We had to have a gut check of ‘what is our job?’ Is it to make sure there are minimal delays or minimal cancellations? Or is our job to make the hard decisions to continue keeping the airspace safe? That is our job — safety,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told reporters this week.

“They can survive without one paycheck. Virtually none of them can navigate financially after missing two,” Duffy said.

The reduction will rise gradually, according to the Transportation Department — up 6% by Nov. 11 and reaching 10% by Nov. 14.
