Navy Secretary John Phelan Dismissed Amid Iran Conflict

(AURN News) — Navy Secretary John Phelan was removed Wednesday by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, with no explanation provided. The Pentagon announced his departure was effective immediately.

This comes as American warships actively blockade Iranian ports, eight weeks into the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Phelan is the latest in a series of military leaders Hegseth has removed. Since taking office, he has fired more than a dozen generals and admirals. Critics inside the Pentagon have called the purge dangerous, with one official saying firing top commanders during an active conflict is simply “insane.”

Stepping in as acting Navy secretary is Hung Cao, a 25-year combat veteran and Trump loyalist, who ran twice for federal office in Virginia and lost both times before being appointed. President Donald Trump praised Phelan on Truth Social, calling him a “long time friend” while leaving the door open for his return.
