According to CBS News, the Navy plans to rename the USNS Harvey Milk — a ship honoring the slain gay rights icon and Navy veteran — and is also eyeing changes to ships named after civil rights heroes like Harriet Tubman and John Lewis.
The move, pushed under the Trump administration‘s call to restore “warrior culture,” has sparked outrage. Critics say it’s a petty erasure of American trailblazers who fought for freedom, dignity, and justice.
Milk was forced out of the Navy in the 1950s for being gay, only to later become a symbol of LGBTQ+ courage. Tubman freed enslaved people and served as a spy for the Union. Lewis nearly died marching for voting rights.
