No Work, No School, No Spending: Minnesota Goes on Strike Over ICE Surge

MINNEAPOLIS (AURN News) – A large coalition of labor unions, faith leaders, small businesses and progressive groups is urging Minnesotans to shut it down today, Friday, Jan. 23. No work, no school, no shopping – and what organizers are calling the largest coordinated protest yet against federal immigration enforcement in the state.

Demonstrations have taken place daily across Minneapolis since 37-year-old Renée Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. Since then, there have been clashes in the Twin Cities, and organizers say the pressure campaign is necessary.

More than 600 local businesses and 100 groups are backing the action, organizers say. Somali-owned businesses in particular have reported sharp losses as workers and customers stay home out of fear of detention.Faith leaders are also front and center, holding services throughout the day. Supporters say they are demanding accountability and an end to aggressive enforcement tactics.
