Obama’s Call With Zohran Mamdani Sparks Endorsement Speculation in NYC Mayoral Race

Former President Barack Obama recently spoke by phone with New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, fueling speculation of a possible endorsement, according to NBC.

Mamdani revealed during a Bronx campaign stop Thursday that the June conversation focused on “the necessity of hope” in politics but declined to say whether Obama signaled support.

Democratic insiders say the acknowledgment alone boosts Mamdani’s profile, even in the absence of a formal endorsement. The 33-year-old Democratic Socialist, whose grassroots rise mirrors Obama’s, has tapped former Obama aides for his campaign.

While figures such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have yet to endorse him, some believe Obama’s backing could help him with Black voters, a demographic where he struggled in the primary.
