On this day in 1947, Octavia Butler was born

Award-winning science fiction writer Octavia Butler was born on June 22, 1947, in Pasadena, California. Butler is one of the most popular Black science fiction writers. Butler’s first novel, “Patternmaster,” was published in 1976 and marked the beginning of her illustrious career. She earned acclaim for other novels such as “Parable of the Sower” and “Kindred,” which became a Hulu series last year.

Her stories feature Black heroines and explore themes of sexual identity and racial conflict within the genre of science fiction. She is the first and only science fiction writer to receive a “Genius Grant” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Octavia Butler passed away in 2006 at age 58.
