Pew Study: Black Americans Redefining What Family Means

(AURN News) — New research is shedding light on relationships within the Black community.

According to data from the Pew Research Center, 77% of Black Americans say their family includes someone who is not a relative. The survey defines that as any person in their life not related to them by blood, marriage or law whom they consider part of their family.

But the close relationships do not end there. The Black community reports more close relationships with non-relatives than any other racial group.

“Black adults and other adults are equally likely to say they feel extremely or very close to a non-relative they consider family,” Pew said.

Pew also found that when it comes to close relationships, Black Americans are more likely to say their relationships with cousins, aunts or uncles and grandparents are extremely or very close.
