Qween Jean Makes Tony Awards History

(AURN News) — Qween Jean made Tony Awards history as the first openly transgender person to win a Tony, according to People.

The activist and costume designer won Best Costume Design of a Musical for “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” at the 79th annual Tony Awards on June 7.

In her emotional acceptance speech, Jean honored queer and trans communities, saying they must continue taking up space and shifting the paradigm.

“Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” a bold reimagining of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic inspired by ballroom culture, entered the night with nine nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical.

Jean was also nominated for Best Costume Design of a Play for “Liberation,” which won Best Play. “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” also won Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography.
